San Diego County cities are taking sharply different paths on homelessness, and a key fault line is whether to accept state money tied to California's Housing First policy — which moves people into permanent housing quickly, without requiring sobriety or treatment first.
Encinitas turned down nearly $4 million in state funding, preferring local control and a partnership with San Diego Rescue Mission.
Carlsbad, working with Oceanside, accepted over $11 million to fund outreach, shelter, and housing — though its mayor warns that housing alone doesn't solve underlying mental health or addiction issues.
The debate reflects a broader tension between state mandates and local flexibility in tackling one of California's most persistent crises. |

Pickleball is coming to Carlsbad in a big way.
The Picklr, an indoor pickleball brand founded in 2021, is set to open a 36,300-square-foot club at 5830 S El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA 92008 in late August 2026.
The facility will feature 10 indoor courts, a pro shop, locker rooms, private event space, and structured programming for all skill levels through its Picklr Academy.
Membership unlocks league play, tournaments, and access to Picklr locations nationwide.
Local owners Neil Capin and Chris Foote will helm the Carlsbad outpost, which is part of The Picklr's ambitious plan to open more than 500 new locations across the United States. |

๐ Urgent Alert: FaceTime Scams and New Windows Malware !!! ๐ |
A new scam is turning Apple's trusted FaceTime app into a tool for theft. Fraudsters pose as bank representatives, contacting victims by text or phone call before switching to a FaceTime video call and convincing them to share their screens.
Once screen-sharing begins, scammers watch in real time as victims log into their bank accounts — capturing passwords, account numbers, and one-time security codes.
Apple notes it will never ask for your password or verification codes. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact your bank directly using the number printed on your card — never the number in an unsolicited text. |

A dangerous new Windows malware called GigaWiper has been spotted in the wild since late 2025, and it's unlike typical threats — it can silently spy on you and permanently destroy your system at the attacker's command.
Microsoft's research reveals GigaWiper is a modular backdoor that merges remote access tools with multiple data-wiping methods, including a fake ransomware component that encrypts files then discards the key, making recovery impossible.
It hides behind a scheduled task disguised as a "OneDrive Update" and can capture screens, control your desktop remotely, and wipe drives entirely. Disconnecting an infected machine from the network immediately is the critical first step if it's detected. |
