Starting in October, California drivers with Clean Air Vehicle decals will no longer be able to drive solo in carpool lanes as federal funding for the program was not extended.

The program has been in place for over 20 years and currently benefits about 500,000 drivers in the state.

The decals also allowed for reduced toll rates, which will no longer be available.

Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized congressional Republicans and President Trump for the expiration of the program, stating it hinders environmental progress.

Despite the cuts, data shows that 25% of new cars sold in California are zero-emission vehicles, indicating continued interest in clean transportation options.

  3. Atmosphere That Feels Both Special & Welcoming

The Village Buzz just launched a brand-new 16-week health series called "Decades of Health — Carlsbad Edition."

Each week, we’ll dive into the surprising truths of thriving through your 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s — and share local Carlsbad tips to help you stay strong, sharp, and energized at every age.

From metabolism slowdowns and hormonal curveballs to heart health, brainpower, balance, and purpose — this series is your insider’s guide to feeling your best in every decade of life. 🏄‍♀️💪🌊

Month 1 — Thriving in Your 30s

  • Week 1: Metabolism Isn’t What It Used to Be

  • Week 2: Sleep Isn’t Just Rest — It’s Repair

  • Week 3: Stress Starts Leaving Its Mark

  • Week 4: Preventive Health Is the New Self-Care

🩺 What They Don’t Tell You When You Hit 30 ❤️‍🩹

Part 1: Your Metabolism Isn’t What It Used to Be

Remember when you could crush a double-double, fries, and a milkshake at In-N-Out at 11 PM and somehow wake up the next day ready to surf at Tamarack? Yeah… those days start to fade once you hit 30. It’s not in your head — your metabolism is shifting.

The Slowdown Nobody Warns You About

Around this age, your body naturally starts burning fewer calories at rest. Muscle mass declines (unless you’re actively working to preserve it), hormone levels fluctuate, and that “eat anything and bounce back” magic disappears. Suddenly, a weekend brewery tour in Carlsbad Village feels like it sticks around a little longer — on your waistline.

The Culprits: More Than Just Food

It’s not only about what you eat. Busy careers, family life, and less spontaneous activity all contribute. Maybe you’re spending more time at your desk than walking on the beach, or maybe stress is quietly raising cortisol, which makes it easier to store fat. Add in slower recovery after workouts, and it’s a cocktail for the dreaded “mystery weight gain.”

Carlsbad-Friendly Fixes

The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your life — just make some smart tweaks.

    • Move with purpose: Trade one happy-hour outing for a walk at Batiquitos Lagoon or a morning jog through Hosp Grove Park.

    • Lift something heavier than your laptop: Strength training helps preserve muscle mass, which keeps your metabolism humming.
Carlsbad offers some great boutique gyms and outdoor boot camps, making it a fun place to be active.

    • Mind the munchies: Farmers markets in Carlsbad Village are loaded with fresh, local produce — swap a bag of chips for something seasonal (and tastier).

    • Hydrate like a local: Water matters more than you think, especially with Carlsbad’s sunny beach days.

Bottom Line

Turning 30 doesn’t mean your metabolism is doomed — it just means it needs a little more TLC. Think of it as trading the “fast burn” of your 20s for the “steady fuel” of your 30s. With a few lifestyle hacks, you can keep feeling energetic, confident, and ready for everything from a beach volleyball game to a night out on State Street.
