Carlsbad may be known for its beaches, surf spots, and laid-back village vibes—but for those who love the outdoors, it’s also a hidden paradise for hikers. With a mix of coastal trails, inland preserves, and volcanic hills, Carlsbad offers something for everyone—whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll, a moderate weekend workout, or a heart-pumping climb with a view.

For a relaxing, easy hike, start with the Batiquitos Lagoon Trail, one of Carlsbad’s most beloved natural escapes. This flat 1.75-mile path hugs the lagoon’s north shore, offering birdwatching, interpretive signs, and tranquil water views. It’s perfect for families, leashed dogs, or anyone wanting to trade screen time for fresh air.

Another local favorite is the Carlsbad Sea Wall Trail, a 0.7-mile paved coastal walkway that runs along Carlsbad Boulevard—ideal for a sunrise jog or sunset stroll with ocean breezes and sweeping Pacific views.

If you’re ready for a moderate adventure, head to the Lake Calavera Preserve, a 110-acre network of trails circling an ancient volcanic plug known as Cerro de la Calavera. Choose from several interconnected paths—some gentle, others rocky and steep—to experience diverse terrain and incredible vistas of the surrounding hills.

Rancho La Costa Preserve also offers moderately challenging switchbacks that reward hikers with sweeping views of North County’s backcountry and the shimmering coast beyond.

Looking for something more strenuous? Try the Veterans Park Trail, which climbs from shaded sections to open ridgelines overlooking the Agua Hedionda Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean. You’ll get a solid workout and a postcard-worthy payoff at the summit.

No matter which trail you choose, preparation makes all the difference.

Always stay on marked trails, respect wildlife, and pack out any trash to help preserve these local treasures.

Whether you’re seeking peaceful reflection by the lagoon or an invigorating climb above the city, Carlsbad’s trail network invites residents and visitors alike to explore its natural side—one step, one view, and one unforgettable hike at a time.
